If you are #head of #operations in a bank or hedge fund and are curious about in getting into the front office here are 5 tips that might be helpful:1. Learn all you can about the basics of interest rates. This is a particularly good tool if you want to get into an FX Desk. Focus on Fed Fund Futures than the tsy curve. Here's the thing. You don't need to be an expert - just the top line stuff.2. Make it your business to carve out 30 mins each week of your schedule to learn more about the role FX traders do. Learn about their challenges and nightmares. Try and put yourself in their shoes. Go back the last VOL crisis and unpick it for a talking point 3. Learn how to get a USD and RISK view. (Probably the most underrated skill you can get) 4. Now approach one of them you think might want to give you some time. Come armed with points 1, 2 and 3. 5. Get over yourself with Imposter Syndrome. Look at me ffs. I worked in telly but managed to be a Futures Trader for the biggest Prop desk in europe. Try it and if you get no response move onto a different trader. If you persist I strongly believe you will be happy with the results. A result in my eyes is a professional front desk relationship with a trader you can take out for lunch once in a while. It is your way in. If you get no results then at least you have learnt something new about markets. As a head you may have great relationships already. If you do the above they will sure to improve.
